Unable to lose weight?

Seeing your doctor may the best path for you to take. There are a number of medical condition that can have an effect on weight loss. In many causes they can be sorted relatively easily and will give you the opportunity to be more successful with your weight loss endeavors.

Underlying medical conditions

There are many medical conditions that can make losing weight very difficult. There most common include:

Depression
A common symptom of depression is weight gain. For many sufferers the weight gain can also add to the depressive symptoms to create a nasty spiral.

Bi-polar disorder
Also known as manic depression.

Hyperthyroidism
This condition is where the thyroid doesn't produce enough of certain hormones to properly regulate the bodies metabolism.

Type 2 diabetes
A very common condition now in the western world. Many people who suffer from this condition are unable to lose weight.

Menopause
Weight gain is a very common symptom of the menopause. Most women experience the menopause between the ages of 45-55.

Other less well known conditions include:

  • Dilated cardiomyopathy
  • Eclampsia
  • Cushing's syndrome
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Certain Cancers
  • Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
  • Klinefelter syndrome
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Masculinisation
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Myxedema
  • McCune-Albright Syndrome
  • If you suffer from any of these conditions. It is possible that they are having an effect on your efforts to lose weight. I am not a doctor so I am unable to say for sure, so your best bet is to speak to your GP about it.

    Medications

    There are many medications that can cause you to be unable to lose weight. This is true for both over the counter and prescription only medications. Be sure to read the label and check the potential side effects list for anything to do with weight gain.

    The most commonly offending medications of weight gain include:

  • Steroids (e.g. prednisolone)
  • Anti depressants (e.g. prozac, paxil, zoloft)
  • Anti Psychotics (e.g. zyprexa)
  • Contraceptive medications
  • Diabetes medications (e.g. Diabinese)
  • There are many more. If you feel there is a chance the medication you are taking is affecting your weight losing efforts, it is very important to speak to your doctor about it.
