Treadmill exercise to lose weight...

Does the ideal of being able to exercise in your own home appeal to you? If so, treadmill exercise to lose weight may be just for you.

As with all forms of exercising, especially if you are trying to lose weight, it is important to choose something you will enjoy. This way you will have a better chance of sticking to it.

Treadmill exercise to lose weight has many advantages over other forms of outdoor exercise including:

  • No need to go outside
  • The weather is never an issue
  • You have easily access to a clean restroom at all times (assuming yours is clean :)
  • You can wear whatever you like whilst exercising
  • You can have entertainment whilst you exercise in the form of music, TV etc
  • No outside dangers like crossing main roads
  • No nasty exhaust fumes to inhale
  • Rarely any excuses not to exercise. A treadmill is always there waiting for you!
  • An opportunity to exercise if you have commitments at home, like children
  • Are there any disadvantages to using a treadmill?

Yes, there sure are, at least for me. I love to get out into the countryside and go for a walk, though I can appreciate this isn't for everyone.

Another disadvantage is the fact that quite often you don't work as many muscles as you would walking outside, due to the fact that you are effectively walking on the flat all of the time.

Walking up and down hills taxes your muscles very differently. The same is true for walking up and down curbs.

With all this said, for many I suspect the advantages of treadmill exercise will far out way the disadvantages.

How many calories will walking on a treadmill burn?

It's very difficult to put an exact figure on it, because it does depend on your weight and of course the speed you are walking at.

However, a good way to get a general idea is to look at your weight in pounds. If you walking at around 3 miles per hour, the number of calories you burn in one hour will be approximately the same as your weight in pounds.

For example if you weigh 200lbs and walk at 3 miles per hour, for an hour, you will burn approximately 200 calories. This is a nice simple way to get a reasonably accurate idea of the number of calories you are burning.

Typically walking on a treadmill will burn less calories than walking outside. One of the reasons for this is the fact that there is no wind resistance.

A treadmill is too expensive, can I use the one as the gym?

Yes, if you are cannot afford to buy a treadmill at present, you can goto your local gym and use the one there. Personally, rather than do that, I would rather just go for a walk outside, but as always, the choice is yours. Just be sure it is never a chore.

You have only talked about walking, can I use my treadmill for running?

Yes, of course. Treadmill running is an excellent way to aid your weight loss. It will also burn considerably more calories than walking.

    Which treadmill should I buy

There are many different treadmills out there and the most suitable one for you may depend on many things, like the size and cost etc. One useful resource I have found for reviewing different treadmills is Treadmilladviser.com.
